Kernel Inference: Journal of Speculative Inference has been developed with the support of Metapunkt (metapunkt.org) as part of the Forward Remembrance Project, a speculative artistic research (PhD) project at the Trondheim Academy of Fine Art of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).
Forward Remembrance is an artistic research project that explores the intersection of human creativity, artificial intelligence, and speculative futures. Through collaborative work between humans and AI systems, the project investigates new forms of knowledge production and cultural imagination.
Kernel Inference: Journal of Speculative Inference is inspired by the unfolding methodologies from the Forward Remembrance project and serves as a platform for encouraging speculative inference as a knowledge creation mechanism, encouraging human‑machine collaboration, and emphasizing transparency in human‑AI partnerships through the KAM (Kernel Attribution Matrix) system. The idea of the journal was first conceived in 2025 and presented as part of a talk titled 'Hacking the Kernel' (styled as a speculative launch event for the journal) - one half of a set of two performative talks presented at Kunst Etter KI (Art After AI) - a programme series by Trondheim Electroniske Kunstsenter (TEK) in Trondheim, Norway.
